Background
In 2000, Making Strides of Alabama, Inc. was founded out of the need for a comprehensive physical program for children with Cerebral Palsy and motor deficits, by Phyllis and Jerry Templeton whose twin daughters have Cerebral Palsy. We held our first four-week intensive “camp” in July 2000. That first program was a clear success and was based upon the concepts and principles of Conductive Education. Eventually, Making Strides facilitated bringing the Adeli Suit program to Alabama through Children's Hospital of Alabama. For Infomation concerning this program please contact Children's PT/OT department at 205 939 6289.
The Mission
Making Strides of Alabama, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) designated not-for-profit foundation to promote, educate and facilitate intensive physical programs and other treatments for children and young adults with motor dysfunction and deficits. The overriding focus is on the full and complete achievement of each person’s independence and respective potential as an adult in their own community.
It’s a labor of love determined by the needs of the children. Each child is unique in their needs, abilities and readiness to learn new movement skills. What is common is growth. As each child reaches new goals, they face setbacks as they grow. With intensive physical programs and other methods we will use, setbacks can be minimized.
Vision
We continue to seek competent professional advice and research for treatments for children and adults with motor disabilities. We will work with medical professionals to develop programs and measure results of the chosen methods - short-term and long-term. Finally, to remain focused on concise programs that are clearly effective while limiting the multiple layers of decision-making that typically delay start-up of new programs. |
